Myrtis Gerene Clawson, 95, passed away in Johnson City, TX.

Myrtis was born October 14, 1921, in Levita, TX, to Bunyan P. Powell and Fannie B. Powell (Newman). Myrtis was born at the Powell homeplace in Levita, TX, where she grew up picking cotton and attending local schools. After graduating from the Ireland School with honors, she worked as a switchboard telephone operator in Hamilton, TX. She began dating Doyle, the only love of her life, and later boarded a train to marry him in Florida before he was shipped overseas to serve in World War II. After the War, Myrtis and Doyle raised four children and throughout, she remained a homemaker helping Doyle as needed when he operated the Observation Point Cafe at Buchanan Dam, then Longhorn Cavern in Burnet, and later Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. Myrtis was a loving, devoted Christian and raised her children with the advice her mother gave her,"If you can't speak well of others, say nothing at all."

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle Wayne Clawson Sr.; son, Cary Dale Clawson; and seven siblings, Artie Waldrop, Nona Sparlin, Grady Powell, Vada Smith, Prentice Powell, Milton Powell and Venita Adams.

Mrs. Clawson is survived by three children, Doyle Clawson, Jr. and wife Cookie, Donna Booth and husband Robert and Carla Clawson; daughter-in-law, Starr Clawson; one sister, Winnie Lee Felps, twelve grandchildren, twenty one great -grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Sylvia Harlow.

She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Board Branch Cemetery in Lone Grove near Llano, TX.
