Katie was born on November 22,1903 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. She was of Spanish heritage.

Katie married George W Hughes of Junction, Texas. About 1921 their first child, Florence, was born in New Mexico. Their second child, Harvey Hughes was born in Ajo, Arizona on May 8, 1924. Her husband George was employed as a car repairman. The family was living in Clarkston/Rowood, now a ghost town, about a mile to the east of Ajo. Josephine "Josie" arrived about 1926 followed by William Hughes in 1929. George was then working as a constable. Laurence was born in May, 1930 and died in November of the same year. Katerine "Rosie" Hughes was born in 1931. George W Hughes died from a cerebral hemorrhage on December 31, 1933 in Ajo and was buried at the Ajo Cemetery.

The 1940 Ajo census shows that Katie Hughes had married Elmo Love "Ricks". Elmo, born in 1895 to Jackson B and Cora Lee "Rix", had arrived in Ajo by 1935 if not before. In 1940 he was working as a blacksmith's helper at the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge mining corporation in Ajo. Four of Katie's children were listed: Harvey (16), Josephine (13), Billie (12) and Rosie (8). The family was living in Rowood. By 1951 the family moved out of Rowood and into Ajo. The 1975 obituary of Katie Ricks notes that she had been an Ajo resident from 1951 - 1958.

Elmo and Katie may have had at one child if not more. Mary Jane Rix was born about 1943. Elmo was also the father of John and Dan Rix.

A World War I veteran Elmo entered the veteran's hospital in Tucson for massive bleeding ulcers. He died on September 24, 1957. At the time of his death the family was living at 431 W. Esperanza Ave. in Ajo. About a year or so later Katie moved out of Ajo. Mary Jane Rix's photo is in the 1960 Ajo High School annual as a Freshman.

Katie Sierra Hughes Ricks died from a stroke at her home in Pittsburg, California on December 9, 1975. Katie was laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Antioch, California. She was survived by John Rix, Harvey Hughes, William Hughes, Josie (Josephine) Hughes, Katherine (Rosie) Hughes and Mary Jane Rix Lucida. She also was survived by twenty-two grandchildren.

NOTE: The 1975 obituary noted that Jack Berry "Ricks" of Ajo was Katie's brother-in-law. Also the March 1958 edition of the Ajo phone book listed Kate "Ricks" at 431 W. Esperanza Ave. Apparently some family members spelled the surname "Rix" and others "Ricks".
