Jim was born in Wayne County, Illinois to the late Silas and Hattie (Phillips) Carter. Jim retired as Sales Manager from General Oil Field Supply Company with stores in IN, IL, KY, and OH. He and his wife Kay enjoyed traveling in retirement and were proud to have visited 49 states by car. His greatest joy was his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim was a member of the Petroleum Club, Elks Club of Carmi, and a lifelong member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Burnt Prairie, IL.

Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years Helen Kathleen (Pollard) Carter; son Rex (Teri) Carter of Lawrenceburg KY; daughters Ronda (Mark) Corbett and Becky (Rick) Elbrink of Evansville; daughter-in-law Becky Carter of Evansville; grandchildren Senior Officer Joe Allen US Navy, Jessica (Jason) McCord, Chloe Carter, Kristen (Jake) Kuhn, Megan (Dustin) Baker, Lesley (Jeremy) Buley, Austin Carter, and Michael Carter; great-grandchildren Marlana (Joshua) Knapp, Kelsey, Lane, and Dustin Allen, Carter McCord, Alta and Laila Kuhn, Ori Baker, Jesse and Hattie Buley; great great-grandson Landon Knapp; brother Robert Carter and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his oldest son Randy; sisters Hazel, Pauline, and LouEva; brothers Chelsea, Lowell, William, and Donald.

Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Pierre Funeral Home where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 7:00 pm. Graveside services will be held at the Burnt Prairie Cemetery in Burnt Prairie, IL at 1:00 pm on April 14, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Liberty Baptist Church, 2373 County Rd. 1200E, Grayville IL 62844; or American Cancer Society 5250 Vogel Rd. Ste. A, Evansville IN 47715; or a charity of your choice .
