Bertie Mary Ann Taylor passed away on April 15, 2017. She was born on December 23, 1921 to Ashley Albert Louis LaFloor "Flow" Taylor and Sophia Mae Warren Taylor in Bertram, Texas.
She was the fourth of six children and the only girl until her little sister came along ten years later. She grew up on the family farm. Bertie said that originally her mother named her Mary Ann but Bertie's older brother decided that her name was Bertie Mary Ann. So that's what the family called her. She stayed in school until she graduated from Bertram High School in 1940. In her last few weeks of life Bertie talked about how important it was to her that she graduated from high school and something she was determined to do. After graduating she married William "Bill" Whitby on October 23, 1940 in Austin, Texas. Bill and Bertie were married 25 years at the time of his death. Several years after Bill's death, Bertie married Edwin "Eddie" Hohmann on January 27, 1974. Bertie and Eddie had been married 21 years when he died.
Bertie held several jobs during her lifetime some of which were Scarbroughs, Yarings, JC Penney and Polar Ice Cream. Besides working the sales floor at Scarbroughs Bertie sometimes operated the elevator which she said was quite interesting and fun. She worked the longest at Yarings and this was the job from which she retired at the age of 75. She lived in Austin many many years and would recollect on her old neighborhood and neighbors who looked out for her after Edwin's death.
She moved to Liberty Hill to be near her sister Nell in 2003. She attended the Highway 29 Church of Christ in Liberty Hill. It was in Liberty Hill that Bertie had her first and only birthday party. It was for her 90th birthday and given to her by her neighbor and friend. It was a very special day for Bertie and an event that she continued to remember and talk about ever since. Just like her determination to graduate from high school Bertie was determined to live life on her own terms and never wavered on her stance to live in her home or be in charge of health decisions until her death.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Floyd "Buck", Earl, Robbie and Paul Taylor; sister Nell Hays; her two husbands William Whitby and Edwin Hohmann; and a step-son Morris Hohmann.
Bertie never had any children but she leaves behind nieces, nephews and many friends including two special friends who helped Bertie for many years and took care of her the last several weeks of her life.
