Louisa Augusta Flavin, age 85 of West Salem, IL passed from this life to the next, on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, IL.

Louisa was born in Plano, IL on August 9, 1931 to Frederick and Alice Coral (Podschweit) Cleveland.

She married Norman Burdett on December 27, 1952 in Plano, IL and they enjoyed almost 44 years of happiness. Following their retirement, they looked forward to spending every winter in Texas. Being the wife of a Veteran, Louisa took special pride in the fact that they had grandsons who proudly served in the military.

Louisa had a very strong faith, which was lived out in practical ways, including her membership at the First Christian Church in West Salem, attendance at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, volunteering at the West Salem Senior Center's Meals on Wheels Program, her job as a teacher's aide at the West Salem Grade School (which became more than a job, as she invested in many students' lives!), baking, cooking and hosting large holiday dinners. Louisa had the gift of hospitality to the extent that family members, friends and even strangers, would equally feel welcome around her table. In her earlier days, she enjoyed fishing, and even caught a snapping turtle that became turtle soup that fed most of the town! In more recent years, she enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching. She had a zest for life that included joking and making people laugh, and knew how to push the limits. Unless you wanted her to try something, it was best not to tell her she couldn't accomplish a particular thing. She was a fighter to the end!

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor and will be missed by many, including her four daughters: Linda Kay Bowker, Karen Lee Foss, Janet Ann Merrick, and Nancy Jo Knotts; ten grandchildren: Lyndsay Groeneveld, Justin Groeneveld, Andrew Bowker, Lloyd Foss, Steven Smith, Samantha Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Jennifer Esparza, Sara Knotts, and Zech Knotts; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister in law, Eileen Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers: Fritz, Jiggs, and Bob Cleveland; and one grandson, Jordan Flavin.

In lieu of memorials, please "Pay it Forward" and do something kind for someone else in Louisa's memory. In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 6 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Ingram Funeral Home of West Salem is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
