Francis M. Ferguson enlisted as a Private in A Company, 1st Infantry Batallion, CSA. That unit was composed of men from Smithville and DeKalb Co. He was captured while on leave at home, escaped, captured again with wounds, and sent to Camp Mortan, Indiana, after being captured at Donelson. He was in a Union Hospital in Camp Mortan when he died in 1862 from his wounds.
