Nola Griffin Clark age 90 of Southport, Florida was welcomed into the arms of her Saviour on Sunday, April 9, 2017. From her birth in Ducktown, Tennessee on October 23, 1926 to her death on Palm Sunday she nourished people around her with love, faith, and music. She was born at home to Roscoe and Maggie (Owen) Griffin and was the fifth of six children. By the age of four Nola started playing the guitar and joined her father and sisters touring with their group The Griffin String Band. They traveled throughout the Nashville area in the 1930’s and 40’s, playing on WSIX, WSM, and The Grand Ole Opry. She became a member of the WSM Friends and Neighbors Club in 1936. Throughout her life she enjoyed singing gospel music, even after 12 years of Alzheimer’s she still remembered every word to every hymn.
After graduating from Rockwood high school in 1945 as valedictorian of her senior class, she attended Tennessee Technical Institute majoring in business. Following her education, she began her career in accounting at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This is where on a blind date she met her husband Wayne Hall Clark. They eloped three months later on February 25, 1955….. she was 28 and he was 30! It was Nola’s strong Christian values, dedication to family, great sense of humor and stunning good looks that attracted Wayne to her like a bee to honey! Her quick wit and ability to deliver a humorous line was known to all those around her. Just this past January when an emergency room nurse asked what her name was she quickly responded “Puddin’ N’ Tain!” and then she giggled…..she always giggled.
Nola and Wayne made Southport, Florida their home in 1965. She was a devout Christian and loved teaching children’s Sunday School, Girls in Action (G.A.’s) and Vacation Bible School in her church. She will be remembered as a bright, shining light by all who knew her. Left to honor Nola and remember her love are her three children, Steve Clark and wife Annette, Candy Heintz and husband Russell, Brad Clark and wife Tammy, three grandchildren who she adored, Tim Heintz, Stephen DeVillers and Michelle DeVillers, and her ever faithful and loving brother and sister-in-law who lived next door to Nola for over 60 years, Roy and Ann Clark. The Clark family would also like to extend a special gratitude to all the staff at Community Health & Rehabilitation Centre in Panama City for their attentiveness and loving care for both Nola and Wayne Clark.
Nola was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Wayne Hall Clark, her parents Roscoe & Maggie Griffin, and sisters Dorothy Allen, Edith McDonald, Edna Wrather, Alice Jane Mangrum, and Evelyn Lawson.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 11th at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Panama City. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday, April 12th at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Nola’s son Steve Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery on Hwy 231 in Panama City. Tommy Thompson, Furman Williamson, Gary Clark, Tracy Richardson, Robert Heintz and Chip Chester will be serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be all her children’s friends that she welcomed to her table throughout the years!
