Mary Anne Thomas Johnston, 80,died at the Village at Brookwood on Friday, October 14, 2016 following a six year struggle with ALS.

A native of Wake County, she was the wife of the late Leslie Carroll Johnston, Jr. and the daughter of Edward Raymond Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Davis Thomas, both deceased.

Mrs. Johnston was a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School and Elon University and received her Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a retired music teacher in public and private schools. Later, she performed professionally as an accomplished soprano. Mrs. Johnston was also a travel agent for 32 years in Greensboro, NC. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Johnston Coulter and husband Ronald of Chapel Hill, Kimberly Johnston of Cary and Lisa Johnston Smithdeal of Morrisville; a sister, Amy Thomas Hendrickson and husband Jay of Raleigh; a brother, Raymond L. Thomas and wife Judy of Hickory; and five grandchildren, Bradley Coulter, Alex Coulter, Parker- Beaman, Mary Jo Beaman and Hillary Smithdeal.

A memorial service will be conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 1:45 til 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
