Charles married Ida Ted Durrett about 1909 in Texas. In 1910 the family was living in Arlington Heights Texas and Charles was working as a laundry driver. Their only son, Benjamin Douglas Merrell, was born in Wolf City, Texas that year.

By 1918 the family had moved to Bakersfield, California and Charles was working as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Sometime between 1920 and 1930 the family had moved to Los Angeles California and Charles was working as a conductor for the same railroad company.

Charles was still working as a conductor at the time of his death.
