Elvada was the third daughter born to Emmett and Volina Lefors Cash. Agnas Leevell, age 7, having died before Elvada was born. She and her sister, Altha grew up in Wise County, south of Boyd, on the family home place. On April 27, 1943, she married AD "Spec" Simpson in Blackstone, Virginia, where he was stationed. They were the parents of two sons, Rodney and Elton Simpson.
