Son of Thomas and Nancy (Morris) White. His ancestry was English and Welsh. The White ancestors migrated from the British Isles to Virginia, then to Tennessee. After James Morris White's birth his own family moved to Alabama.

In November 1833 the White family moved from Alabama and began the trip to Quincy Illinois. James Morris White saw a star fall and remarked on this throughout his life. 11 December 1833 the White family reached Quincy.

In 1836 the family purchased a farm in Honey Creek, Adams county Illinois. James married Margaret Elizabeth Guymon 31 March 1853. The newlyweds farmed and raised their family on a farm near Coatsburg, in Adams county Illinois. James Morris White was known for his belief in temperance and for his Republican political beliefs. He voted for every Republican except for Abraham Lincoln. He refused spirits and tobacco.

James Morris White died in Paloma, Adams county, Illinois at 6 a.m. 19 October 1916.

His funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, 22 October 1916, at the Methodist church of Coatsburg, with interment following at the Coatsburg cemetery (now called Gray Mount.)
