In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Harry Dovel, Calvin Dovel, and Lynwood Dovel; sisters, Ruby Dovel, Mamie Lam, Clara Akers, and Irene Hughes.
Layton enjoyed hunting in his youth, playing rook and was a fan of NASCAR. He was a forklift driver for Alliance for many years before his retirement and attended the St. Peter's United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his sisters, Maxine Day of Elkton, and Margaret Sipe of Bridgewater; numerous nieces and nephews; and his caregiver, Saunie Dearing of Elkton.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating. Burial will be private at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home in Elkton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, 20871 Blue and Gold Drive, Elkton, Va. 22827.
