Harry Nelson Otto was the son of Nelson Scott Otto (1853 Pennsylvania - 1932 California) and Anna Maria Bulcroft Otto (1855 Connecticut - 1936 California). His parents married 4 May 1879.

On 24 January 1918, as a private in Co. E (17th Co., 20th Engineers, Harry sailed to World War I aboard the troopship SS "Tuscania" which was torpedoed and sunk in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland by German submarine UB-77 on 5 February 1918 with 215 casualties. Harry returned from war aboard "Santa Paula" in May 1919.

On 16 Dec 1919, Harry married Ethel E. Sweeney, 1883 California -1937 California. According to her divorce action, Ethel claimed Harry left her on 23 September 1920. Their son, David Nelson Otto, had been born 14 September 1920. Harry and Ethel divorced in October 1921; her parents William N. Sweeney and Cynthia Ellen Warmoth Sweeney applied at the same time to adopt their grandson, David Otto. David Nelson Otto died 25 March 1996 in Los Angeles County, California.

On 8 September 1945, Harry married Mauda Ethel Warner Graves in Santa Cruz County, California. Mauda had married on 24 December 1903 in Yamhill County, Oregon, to Amos Amanso Graves (1867 Minnesota - 1945 California), by whom she had two children. The divorce of Mauda and Harry was finalized in August 1947 and she reverted to the surname of Graves.

On 10 March 1960, Harry married Hilda Victoria Waterhouse Caldwell (1891 New York - 1973 California), who had resided in Australia and married Albert John Caldwell in Australia. She had a daughter Marlene Hilda / Hilda Winifred Caldwell, who married a Gill, a Clingan and then George Fraleigh.
