John Smith Baldwin (1822- 1893) was born on April 14, 1822, at Elizabeth, seat of Union County, New Jersey, to Smith Baldwin (1787 - 1823) and Mary Passel (Stiles) Baldwin (1788–1848). Of their four children, John Smith Baldwin was the youngest.

During the Civil War, John Smith Baldwin (1822- 1893) served from August 10, 1862, until June 3, 1865, as a bugler and the "Principal Musician" in Company "I" of the 52nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

During the years 1857 to 1862 and 1865 to 1893, John Smith Baldwin served as the superintendent of Wesleyan Cemetery in Cincinnati, seat of Hamilton County, Ohio, excluding only his years of voluntary military service -- August 10, 1862, until June 3, 1865 -- to the United States during the Civil War.

On December 28, 1893, John Smith Baldwin died at the age of seventy-one in Cincinnati, seat of Hamilton County, Ohio, where he was interred two days later at Wesleyan Cemetery in Section D, Lot 14, Grave 04.
