Henry Rogers

Henry G. Rogers, 35, son of Prof. and Mrs. Samuel G. Rogers, 2121 Adams St., drowned Friday in Greenfield, Mass., Madison friends learned Sunday.

The father is a professor of French at the University of Wisconsin. Both parents are in Greenfield for the son's funeral services, which will be held there Tuesday.

Henry Rogers was graduated from the University in 1944, was in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He had been a professional painter since 1952.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Lou Ponder; a 6-month-old daughter, Forest; and two sisters, Mrs. H. Kent Tenney III, 2715 Van Hise Ave., and Mrs. Carl Leopold, Lafayette, Ind.

South Deerfield, May 30 – The body of Henry G. Rogers, 35, an artist who made his home with his wife and daughter in [sic] River Rd., was found today in the Connecticut River in Hadley.

Found by Westfield Man

Rogers had been missing since May 19. State and local police were joined by volunteers in a futile search. The body was discovered about noon by Armon Lajoie of West Springfield near the Sandy Beach boat dock and the Hadley Sportsmen's Club. Troopers Robert Gustavis and Lawrence C. Schumaker of Northampton state police investigated.

Dr. Maurice Kennedy, associate medical examiner for Hampshire County, viewed the body and ordered it removed to the Lipinski funeral home in South Deerfield. He attributed death to drowning. The body was identified by the artist's father, Samuel Rogers of Madison Wis., who has been assisting in the search.

Rogers was born in Providence on Feb. 4, 1923, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rogers. He was educated at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University and formerly was a mathematics instructor at Harvard.

World War II Veteran

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant in the Pacific area for two years.

Besides his wife, the former Lou Ponder, he leaves an infant daughter, Forest; two sisters, Mrs. H. K. Tenney III of Madison, Wis., and Mrs. Carl Leopold of Lafayette, Ind., and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be Saturday at the Lipinski funeral home, followed by cremation.
