Billy W. Fitzgerald, 74, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. He was a resident of Spearsville. He was born July 30, 1931, in Gibson County, Tenn. His parents were Willie Mays and Katie Belle (Butler) Fitzgerald. He married Audrey I. Stanford on July 31, 1948, in Alcorn County, Miss. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Stephen W. (Susie) Fitzgerald of Nashville; eight sisters, Lorene (Joel) Reaves of Franklin, Eralene Durham of Huntsville, Ala., Mildred Durham of Columbia, Tenn., Dorothy (Arnold) Collins of Indianapolis, Mary Marshall of Indianapolis, Margie Armstrong of Franklin, Joyce (Jackie) Blackwell of Greenwood and Retha (Ronnie) Chandler of Franklin; two grandchildren, Lisa Lewis and Sam Fitzgerald; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Catherine Fitzgerald; a brother, Carl Fitzgerald; and a great-grandchild, Graham Lewis.

He retired in 1995 as a bus driver for Brown County School Corp. after 24 years of service. Prior to that he worked as a barber for several years at Furnish Barber Shop in Franklin. He also farmed for many years in Brown County. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Trafalgar. He was a past member of the advisory board for Hamblen Township. He was in charge of maintenance for Hickory Ridge Senior Center in Brown County for the past 13 years. He also enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He attended Indiana Barber College in Indianapolis during the 1950s.
