Alton was an educator at the elementary and college levels, a former Six Nations Band Counsellor, trustee to the Grand Erie Board of Education and the Ontario Board of Parole. He was one of the founding members and past chairman of the Six Nations arena, the Chiefswood Bridge committee, the Gane Yohs Medical Centre and Iroquois Lodge Committees. He also served on many other committees including Public Works, Housing, Justice, Education and Land Claims. Alton was also a former board member of the Helpline Food Bank and the Victim's Crisis Assistance Service. He served on the communications committee for Cancer Care Ontario. He previously worked for the community as an alcohol and drug counselor and criminal court worker and was a member of the Public Works committee, Ganokwa Sra Women's Shelter and Six Nations Park and Recreation.
