THE LATE MR. T. J. DEVINE.
The late Mr. Thomas John Devine, who passed away recently at his residence, Waerenga Road, Otaki, was born in London on October 15th, 1851, and came to New Zealand in the 'Samarang' in 1852 with his parents. They landed at Lyttelton, but after a brief stay came north to Lower Hutt, where the deceased attended school. He then went with his parents to Wainui, where his father managed a farm for the late Sir William Fitzherbert. While at Wainui he married and resided in that district for several years, after which he resided in Whiteman's Valley, and afterwards at Upper Hutt. In 1920 he came to Otaki, where he lived in quiet retirement till his death, which occurred suddenly. Mrs. Devine had only died three months before the death occurred of her husband. The late Mr. Devine, who was of a genial nature, kind-hearted, and respected by all, took a quiet, but keen interest in the district and the Dominion in general. His death came as a shock and for his relatives much sympathy has been expressed. A family of six are left to mourn their loss, viz., Jack (Mamaku), Jim (Feilding), Tom (Levin), Mrs. Guerney and Mrs. Dave Noble (Otaki), and Mrs. Nelson (Taumarunui). There are 33 grandchildren, and seven great grand-children. The funeral, which took place at the Upper Hutt, was largely attended, and an impressive service was conducted at the Church by the Rev. M. Ayrton, of Otaki, and Mr. Cochrane (Upper Hutt), while at the graveside the Rev. Ayrton and the Rev. Hunt (Upper Hutt) officiated.
