HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Richard "Dick" Kelley, stepfather of former President Bill Clinton, died Wednesday at his home. He was 91.

Kelley was a salesman and ran a family food brokerage business for many years in Little Rock before retiring in 1992.

Kelley had been in declining health in recent weeks, and the former president visited him at his home on Monday.

Kelley died about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Kelley enlisted in the Navy and became an athletics instructor from 1943-1946, teaching enlistees how to swim. After his military service, Kelley joined his father in his new business, Kelley Brokerage Co., a Little Rock food brokerage firm.

His father left the business in 1965 to Kelley and Kelley's younger brother. Selling to Arkansas supermarkets, the two traveled across the country seeking national food manufacturers accounts.

In 1936, Kelley married Jane Jordan of Little Rock. The couple had two children. The family moved to their Lake Hamilton summer home in the early 1960s, and Kelley continued to commute to Little Rock. In 1978, he and his wife divorced.

In a 1994 newspaper interview, Dick Kelley said he met Clinton's mother at the Oaklawn race track nurse's station, where he'd gone to get aspirin. The following year, the two met again at parties, but then Virginia was a widow for the third time, and Kelley was divorced. Virginia lost her job as an anesthetist and Dick was semiretired. The couple married Jan. 17, 1982.
Stepfather of US President William J. Clinton. He married Clinton's mother, Virginia, in 1982, and she died in 1994. Mr. Kelley was co-owner of Kelley Brokerage Company and a Navy veteran of World War II. In addition to President Clinton, Mr. Kelley is survied by a son, Richard A. Kelley; a daughter, Kathy Farrar; a stepson, Roger Clinton; and five grandchildren.
