Mr. Nelson had worked as a machinist at Lafayette Instrument, Ross Gear and Metal Masters, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Lafayette, American Legion 492, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 496. He was a World War II veteran, having served in England and Iceland in the Army medical unit.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Nelson of Indianapolis and David Nelson of Brookston; two brothers, John W. Nelson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and James Nelson of Raleigh, NC; a niece, Iris Smith of Bloomington, MN; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
