On October 15, 1855 a terrible massacre took place along the ROGUE RIVER of Josephine County, Oregon, in an area known as "Jump-off-Joe" Creek.

The family of Lewis Haines (7 members) along with several of their neighbors were killed, and left along the creek, for the volunteer militia to find and bury, on site.

The Haines family had intended to raise an apple orchard, along with the normal farming needed for their large family.

A historical marker has been placed in the area.

the daughter of Meshack & Sarah (Moss) Vanlandingham.
