Robert Matthew Gross, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Blum) Gross, was born April 18, 1932, at Earling, lowa. He was baptized, confirmed and received his First Holy Communion at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, lowa. Bob attended St. Joseph's School in Earling and grew to adulthood on the family farm. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving his honorable discharge October 25, 1953. After his military service Bob worked for a steel company in Omaha and attended Farm School.
Bob was united in marriage to Mary Tremel on May 3, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama, lowa. They were proud parents of seven children. After their marriage they lived on a farm west of Earling. Bob's life was dedicated to farming. He was a member of the Pork Producers Association and of the Cattlemen's Association. Bob was named Pork Producer of the Year in 1984. He enjoyed good times with his family, spending time with his cattle, vacations in the mountains, air planes and going for scenic drives on Sunday afternoons. Bob was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling.
Bob died May 21, 1999, on his farm near Earling, having attained the age of sixty-seven years, one month and three days.
ln addition to his parents, Joseph and Josephine, Bob was preceded in death by his infant son David.
