David Hamilton Howse, Sr., better known to many as Ham Howse, who was a widely known sportsman, business, civic and religious citizen, passed away Tuesday night at 8 o'clock at Webb-Williamson Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks following a stroke of paralysis at his home. Mr. Howse was born in Gibson county, near Humboldt, January 24, 1888. His parents were the late Gentry and Mozella Hamilton Howse. He moved to Jackson in 1917 and for several years was associated with Gooch-Edenton Hardware Co. In 1932 he established the Ham Howse Sporting Goods Co. and remained active in the business until retiring in1953. He was particularly interested in hunting and fishing and had been president of the West Tennessee Trapshooting Club. Mr. Howse was an active member of the West Jackson Baptist Church. He had served on the board of deacons, was a former Sunday School superintendent and had served as superintendent of the Baptist Training Union. He was a member of Jackson Lodge, No. 192, Elks, where he served as exalted ruler and was also a life member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Mr. Howse was of a genial, friendly nature, had a wide acquaintance in this section and was popular with all groups. He was married Nov. 28, 1911 to Miss Maureen Philp of Humboldt. Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Lanier Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. David Q. Byrd, pastor of the West Jackson Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
