She was born February 24, 1930, in Davie County, to the late John Pickney and Grace Albea Gaither.
Shirley was a lifetime member of New Union United Methodist Church in the Sheffield community. She had a lifetime career in textiles as a seamstress and supervisor working at Blackwelder Mfg., Monleigh Garment Co. and Carolina Lingerie in Mocksville. She enjoyed crocheting and playing with her favorite dog, “Slate”.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Johnny T. Smith, Sr.; an infant brother, Earl, a brother, Wayne H. Gaither and a sister, Beavey L. Gaither.
Survivors include a brother, John A. Gaither (Wanda) of Mocksville; and a nephew, John “Al” Gaither of Charlotte.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Eric Lineberry officiating. Interment will follow in the New Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service.
