Obituary for Hope Bracewell

Hope Garton Bracewell, 95, of Corydon went to be with the Lord on March 26, 2017 at the Corydon Specialty Care after a full and rich life serving God and others. Hope was born to Mamie and James Hamilton Garton August 17, 1921. Her family lived on a farm near Clio, moved to Bloomington, Indiana during the Great Depression, and then returned to the family farm.

She graduated from Allerton High School in 1940 and attended Simpson College in Indianola for one year. She taught at the Cockleburr one room school house northeast of Corydon in 1941-1942. She worked for Western Union in Ogden, Utah in 1944 and then in Des Moines. During a shore leave in 1945, she married Carl Bracewell at the Clio Methodist Church just before the end of WW II. After the war, they moved to Chicago where Carl studied electronics and then returned to Allerton to start his business. In 1953 they moved to Corydon.

Hope was a faithful member at First Baptist Church of Corydon until her death, serving as pianist, organist, deaconess and Sunday School teacher. Having taken piano lessons from her cousin, Anita Speer, Hope continued learning piano on her own until she could play the entire hymn book and several classical pieces. Her love of music and children moved her to give hundreds of Wayne County children piano lessons. She was an active member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary.

Her love for teaching was evident in creative methods in her fourth grade Sunday School class, piano workshops, Vacation Bible School and denominational activities. She had various hobbies, among which were gardening, sewing, and crocheting.

Hope was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Carl, her parents, her oldest son Paul, her infant sister, Faith, and her brothers Joseph, Boyd and Homer.

Pallbearers will be her sons and grandsons. Reverend Daniel Palmer will officiate with burial in the Allerton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 28 at First Baptist Church of Corydon. The funeral service will be on Wednesday March 29 at First Baptist Church of Corydon at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Hope's honor may be given to the Gideons International.

Hope is survived by three sons, Steven (Marsha) Bracewell of Corydon, Martin (Sherry) Bracewell of Savage, Minnesota, and Dean (Donna) Bracewell of Morristown, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Justin) Bennett, Serena (Doug) Thompson-Turkington, Jonathan (Sarah) Bracewell, Joel (Tina) Bracewell, Gary Bracewell, Joshua Bracewell, Nathan Bracewell and Joseph Bracewell; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
