Julius was the son of William and Ann (Sayle) Watterson from the Isle of Man.
He enlisted in the Civil War on August 19, 1861.

He was listed as killed at the Battle of New Hope Church, May 2, 1864 near Dallas, Georgia during the Atlanta Campaign. His body was never identified, and if so, was probably buried at Marietta National Cemetery after the war as an unknown U.S. soldier since he is not accounted for in the National Cemetery System.

This gravestone at Woodland Cemetery appears to be a cenotaph.
Cemetery records do not show a date of burial for him.

His name in is also on Panel #1 on the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors" Monument on Public Square in Cleveland, OH.
