"Madison...Hammonassett (a tract westard of that river, a considerable part of which had been cleared by the Indians) was used as a common field. In 1650, Guilford encouraged a removal to it, by offering a certain portion of cleared land to every settler for the period of five years, but whether any removed to it on that condition has not been ascertained. In 1656 the upland was surveyed and allotted to each planter in the town according to his lot. Probably about this time (certainly as soon as 1658) the settlement began. Some of the first settlers on this spot were...Nathan "Bradley from Guilford...They were soon joined by...Thomas Willard from Deerfield...

"...With the settlers in the southwestern part of the town, Nathan Bradley...were early associated; ...The other settlers within the limits of this district were...John Bishop from Guilford some time after settled in the same neighborhood..."

"The First Settlers of Hammonassett

"I think Hammonassett was settled partly to protect the frontiers of the town from the Dutch and also from encroachments by any other group. In 1653 Guilford sent William Leete and Thomas Jordan to New Haven to ask for protection against the Dutch. At this time also England was in considerable turmoil and uncertainty as the Stuart Restoration occurred in 1660 and the republic which had for 20 years been in power on both sides of the Atlantic came to an end. In 1660 trouble was developing between Guilford and New Haven and the Hartford settlement, and new haven did not want to come under the Royal charter of Hartford. Steiner says settlement of Hammonassett began in 1658, some of the first being Ebenezer Thompson, NATHAN BRADLEY, Joseph Hand, William Leete, John Scranton, James Hill and John Meigs, soon joined by Thomas Cruttanden, THOMAS WILLARD, Joseph Wilcox, and Thomas Dowd settled at what is now Liberty Street. John Meigs was a leader of the Hartford faction, and accepted the post of constable for them in opposition to the authority of Guilford and Governor Leete. The Cruttendens and Stevens were also leaders of this group."
