Mary Harriet Hulme Foley passed away March 21, 2017 at her home in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born in Pulaski, Tennessee on May 31, 1923 and attended Peabody College in Nashville.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jonathan Joseph Foley, Jr., her son Jonathan Joseph Foley, III, her parents Dr. and Mrs. Fountain Bruce Hulme, her sisters Evelyn Colvin, and Elizabeth Hulme, and her brother George Hulme. Her sister Louise Haddington of Starkville survives her.
Harriet is survived by her daughter Betty Wentworth (Frank), grandchildren Ward Waltemath (Ashley), Beth Waltemath Lewicki (David), Margaret Waltemath Ash (Jonathan), Jay Foley (Jessica), Mitchell Foley, two step grandchildren, Lellyett Wentworth and Amanda Wentworth (Tom), and by eight great-grandchildren. She is a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
She spent more than 50 years as a community volunteer dedicated to helping those less fortunate. In 1978 she was recognized with the Volunteer Activist Award sponsored by the Cain-Sloan Company and Germaine Monteil for her contributions to the Nashville community. She was a co-founder of the This N' That Thrift Shop and the Mothers’ Club that benefited the St. Luke’s Community Center and promoted funding for a health care and dental program for that community. She served as St. Luke’s board president for several years.
As a dedicated champion of women’s causes, she was a supporter of the Girl Scouts of America and the YWCA. In addition she was inducted into the Academy of Women of Achievement. Harriet also served on the board of Senior Citizens and was presented with the "Crowning Achievement Award." This organization, now known as FiftyForward, created the "Harriet Foley Leadership Award" in her honor.
In 2001, the community organization Hands on Nashville presented Harriet with the Mary Catherine Strobel Award for her outstanding community service.
In the last few years creative works became her passion, and in 2013, her book of poetry The Butterfly Tree was published.
The family would like to give special appreciation to Dr. John Dixon, Dr. Howard Jones, and Dr. Anderson Spickard, and Pat Warren for their special care.
Honorary pallbearers include members of the Warriors Book Club, the Centennial Club Creative Writing Class, and the Town and Country Garden Club.
