During the Civil War Elijah enlisted in the CSA on 1 Apr 1862 as a PVT in Co. B, 14th VA Infantry "The Bedford Rifles Grays". He enlisted at Suffolk on 1 Apr 1862. Muster rolls show him absent, sick, through 30 Apr 1862 and present May and June 1862 but admitted to Farmville General Hospital 8 May 1862, returned to duty 19 May 1862. Present on all rolls until wounded in the leg at Gettysburg and captured 3 Jul 1863, he was sent to DeCamp General Hospital, Devil's Island NY that same month. He was paroled and exchanged in May 1864 and admitted to Farmville General Hospital 8 May 1864 and absent with wounds through July and August 1864, but present on rolls of September and October 1864. He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg PA and suffered a leg wound.
