HOWLAND, KATHARINE LAZIER (McFARLAND), 88, beloved wife of Allen Hathaway Howland (deceased), died peacefully at home on February 10, 2009. Kay was a resident of Providence and Matunuck, RI and Vero Beach, FL.

Born on January 10, 1921, in Toronto, Canada, Kay was the daughter of Justice George Franklin McFarland and Pauline (Adoue) McFarland. She was a 1942 graduate and life-long supporter of Smith College. She received an MFA in Music from Brown University in 1972.

Kay was the devoted mother of two sons, John Hathaway Howland of North Kingstown, RI and his wife Carol; Dr. Peter Adoue Howland of Riverside, RI and his wife Lois Howland of San Diego, CA; and two daughters, Frances A. H. Gammell-Roach of Warwick, RI and her husband, Robert Nicholas Roach, Jr; and Janet Katharine Howland of Oakland, CA and her husband, Jay Gorud. She was Nana to nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was also called Nana by her two step grandchildren and Grana by her three step great grandchildren. She was the sister of Frances Lee Smith of Toronto, Canada, William McFarland of Stratford-upon-Avon, England and the late John McFarland of Toronto, Canada.

Kay had a passion for music and music education. She was choir director at St. Luke's Church, East Greenwich, RI. She taught music at Rocky Hill School, Wheeler School and Ponaganset High School and she sang in the RI Civic Choral and Chamber Singers.

Kay volunteered her time and expertise to numerous civic and educational organizations, including the RI Philharmonic Orchestra, Dorcas Place, Kent Hospital Foundation, Rocky Hill School, RISE (Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education), Reach Out and Read and Planned Parenthood of RI. Kay was also a generous donor to Trinity Repertory Theatre and the RISD Museum. She was past President of the South County Garden Club. Kay was honored with special awards from the RI Philharmonic, Dorcas Place and Rocky Hill School for her many years of service.

Kay enjoyed many pursuits, including golf, gardening, traveling, needlework, swimming, skiing and skating. She was a member of The Hope Club, Point Judith Country Club and the Dunes Club. She was a past member of the Agawam Hunt Club and the Handicraft Club. In Vero Beach, Florida, Kay was a member of Sea Oaks and Bent Pine Golf Club. Kay was a parishioner at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Providence, RI; St. Peter's-by-the-Sea Church in Narragansett, RI, and Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach, FL.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Peirce Street, East Greenwich, RI. Donations in Kay's memory will be greatly appreciated by the Rhode Island Philharmonic or Dorcas Place.
