Mr. H. R. Meeker, who has been seriously ill for several weeks, died at his residence on Maine street, in this city, on Sunday morning. An affliction of the heart, to which he has for a year or two been subject, became much worse about Christmas time, and though he went back to his business in St. Louis, he was obliged to return on New Year's Day.
Since then he has rapidly failed. His friends ministered to him in every way, and he received all the attention which skill and care could provide, but both he and they knew that his disease was fatal.
Mr. Meeker was born in Loraine Ohio in 1833. He first came to Quincy eighteen years ago, but has resided here but a portion of the time since. Keokuk, Fort Scott, and St. Louis have been his principal abodes. Much of the time being engaged in railroad extension, he has been moving from place to place.
Recently he has been with the Brownlee-Wright Car company, of St. Louis. Mr. Meeker was a quiet, undemonstrative man, but of warm heart and tender feelings, and a man who made strong friends and held them.
His worthy character and active life won him the respect of all with whom he came in contact. His wife, a sister of Mrs. E. H. Buckley, and a son, at present in business in St. Louis, are the remaining members of his immediate family.
The funeral was attended yesterday afternoon, the services being conducted by Reverend S. H. Dana of the Congregational church.
