Grandma Julia Payne was a Manisses Indian born and raised on Block Island. She was a lifelong resident of our ancestral homeland keeping the heritage and traditions of the tribe. She was also the tribe's Medicine Woman and delivered many of the island's/family's babies and recorded them in the family Bible. As the custom of our family on the island, she is buried in the Indian Burial Ground (Historical Indian Cemetery).
