William was the son of Shadrack Hays and Elizabeth Newport; husband of Mary Lucentha Hays (a cousin). William and Mary had two known children; daughter Amanda Jane, and son Calvin Porter Hays.

.."Manda" was an infant in the 1870 Jackson, Polk, MO census, with William F. & Mary L. Hays. William F. Hays was listed as age 44, born in Kentucky. Mary L. was listed as age 22, born in Missouri.
..Mary L. Hays, received a Civil War widow's pension in March of 1900. She was the widow of William F. Hays of Co. A, 6th Missouri Cavalry, according to the pension record.
..There were several soldiers name William Hays who served during the Civil War from Missouri. There were also more than one with the middle initial of "F."
..The 1870 Jackson, Polk, Missouri census lists William F. Hays and his family next to E. D. Hays, age 22, also born in Kentucky, and his family. E. D. Hays is listed next to (on the next page) Reed Hays, age 56, born in Kentucky, and his wife, Matilda. Since these Hays men are listed next to each other and are all from Kentucky, it is probable that they were related.
Note: There is a Civil War military headstone record for a William F. Hays of Co. D, 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. The record lists a "country" cemetery in Polk County, Missouri and a death date of January 11, 1863.
