Kenneth Raynor Ellington was the second of four sons born to Jesse Thompson Ellington (1842-1910), a Confederate veteran and sheriff of Johnston County, and his second wife Sallie O. Williamson (1862-1901), a native of Virginia. He had a number of older half siblings from his father's previous marriage.

Mr. Ellington attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1917, he was living in Manhattan, New York City, and employed as an author and editor of law books by the Edward Thompson Compay. He served in the US Navy in World War One, and was living in Washington, DC in 1920, listed as an aviation machinist with the US Navy.

In 1920, Mr. Ellington married Margaret Carr Roberts (1898-1985). She was a daughter of Arthur Carr Roberts and his wife Flora Lucia Smith, of Washington, DC. They were married in Asheville, NC.Mr. Ellington, along with his brother, Douglas D. Ellington, had an architectural office in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1920. In 1926, they moved the office to Asheville, NC, where Mr. Douglas Ellington designed a number of amazing buildings through the 1920s.

In 1926, the Ellington brothers began construction of a charming home in Chunn's Cove near Asheville, using left over materials from their building projects. This is one of the most charming homes I've ever seen, and was later lived in by Kenneth Ellington's daughter, the famed wildlife artist Sallie Ellington Middleton.

The family appears to have moved to Washington, DC in the 1930s, and to Charleston, SC in 1937, but they maintained a summer home at Chunn's Cove.

Kenneth Ellington and Margaret Roberts Ellington had four children, an infant daughter, born & died in 1921, Sallie Williamson Ellington (1926-2009, Mrs. G. A. Middleton), Martha Tucker Ellington (1927-1992, Mrs. Thomas Pettigrew) and Dr. Eric Edward Ellington (1934-1972, m. Ann Morton).
