Whalen was the son of the late Maurice Carl and Clara Olson Stensby. Whalen grew up on a farm where he learned to repair, rebuild, and make useful anything needed for work.
Whalen met and married his wife Lillian in North Dakota and the couple made Napa their home in 1946. In Napa, Whalen proudly operated Whalen Stensby Auto Repair for more than 35 years.
Whalen was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years Lillian. He is survived by his son Richard Stensby and his wife Terri; four grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
He is also survived by Lillian’s sister Eileen Hanson.
