Frank Jameson, 68, aeronautics leader
Frank Gard Jameson, the great-grandson of one of Corona's founders and a prominent figure in Southern California's aeronautics industry, died of a heart attack in Rancho Mirage Sunday.
Mr. Jameson, 68, who lived in Rancho Mirage, was at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, watching over a conference of the Conquistadores del Cielo, an international organization of aerospace and airline executives that Mr. Jameson founded, said Mr. Jameson's son, Jim Jameson.
Mr. Jameson was a third generation Californian and the great-grandson of George L. Joy, one of Corona's founders. Mr. Jameson attended elementary schools in Corona before enrolling in Webb School in Claremont.
He attended Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer from 1942 to 1946, and saw action in the Pacific during World War II when he served on a destroyer, Jim Jameson said.
After the war, he lived in Corona from 1946 to 1948. He started the Navy League in the Corona-Norco area and eventually served as national president for the organization.
Mr. Jameson pursued a career in the aerospace industry. He was president of Teledyne Ryan Aeronautics, senior corporate vice president of Rockwell International, director of Lone Star Industries and board chairman of Glenaire Inc.
He also was known for his civic and philanthropic work.
Mr. Jameson was named honorary consul for Jordan during the mid-1970s and was chairman of the trustees for the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pa.
Perhaps the work he loved most was founding a charity in El Barill, a small fishing village in Baja California where he owned a home.
The charity helped set up a school and church for the village, north of La Paz. The foundation also set a fund to pay for teachers to the school.
Mr. Jameson designed the home in El Barill while recovering from a broken back he suffered in the late 1980s in the crash of a plane flight from Brawley to Palm Springs, Jim Jameson said.
Mr. Jameson was married and divorced three times. He was married to Phyliss Jameson for 27 years. Mr. Jameson was later married to actress Eva Gabor for 11 years and then more recently married to Jude Ballinger Jameson, whom he later divorced.
Mr. Jameson is survived by his two daughters, Joanne Jameson Hunt of Corona del Mar and Mary Gard Jameson of Beverly Hills; two sons, Jim Jameson of Rancho Santa Fe and Frank Gard Jameson Jr. of Boulder City, Nev., and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert. Private interment will be at Pacific View Cemetery in Newport Beach.
The family has asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Frank Gard Jameson El Barill Memorial Fund, 41915 Tonopah, Rancho Mirage, Calif. 92270.
