After a lifetime devoted to Christian ministry and her family, Ann Barnwell Bingham, 92, died Mach 14, 2017 at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Mrs. Bingham, daughter of Val Vertie (Lyda) and Edgar Brownlow Barnwell , was born June 30, 1924 in Edneyville, NC. She received a BS from Women’s College (now UNC-Greensboro) and a Master’s Degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

She married Darris Yates Bingham on March 20, 1945. After Dr. Bingham received his first post-graduate degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary he and Mrs. Bingham began their ministry. She was supportive of and an equal participant in her husband’s work. Among their first churches was Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church in Salisbury where they served until 1951. During this pastorate, Dr. Bingham joined the Air Force as a chaplain. While they were in the military, the Bingham family lived in the United States, Europe and Asia. Mrs. Bingham taught school at each of their postings.

Dr. Bingham retired from the Air Force in 1974 while stationed in San Antonio, Texas. After his retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Bingham ministered on six continents. They helped establish the New England Extension Center of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Louisville, Kentucky in Northborough, Massachusetts. After completion of their work in Northborough, Dr. and Mrs. Bingham returned to San Antonio. Upon Dr. Bingham’s death in 1998, Mrs. Bingham moved to Salisbury, NC where she resided with her son, David and his wife Eva. She worked in David’s law office until 2016. While in Salisbury, she began an endowment to the Rowan County Library in memory of her beloved husband. She was an avid walker. Many friends will remember seeing and greeting her on her five-mile walks around Salisbury each day. Every Saturday, Mrs. Bingham and her son traveled to the family farm in Henderson County, NC where she supervised road building and enjoyed sundry tasks such as blackberry picking. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Bingham was preceded in death by her husband; by a son, Robert Brownlow Bingham, M.D.; and a grandchild, Daniel Yates Bingham. She is survived by her son, David Yates Bingham, and his wife, Eva Nicholas Bernhardt Bingham; three grandsons, Robert Brownlow Bingham, Jr., Christopher Alan Bingham, and Andrew Brian Bingham; and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephew and cousins.

Interment will be with her beloved husband at Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery in San Antonio.
