Lilah Evelyn Strope, The High Commander, 95 years young of Mishawaka passed away on March 14, 2017. She was the glue that held our large family together. We are heartbroken to have lost her, but we feel so blessed to have had her in our lives for so many years.

Lilah was born in Saginaw, Michigan to Roy and Jennie Fickies on April 30, 1921. Lilah spent her teen years on the Starr Farm near Edwardsburg, Michigan where her father, Roy Fickies, was herdsman for Hub Beardsley and his prize herd of Guernsey cattle. She was a farmer's wife and cooked many hearty meals for her husband and family. She was known as the, Tomato Princess, and shared her garden with everyone.

Lilah was preceded in death by her husband, Albert (Bert) Strope, Jr. and her siblings: Lynn (Dorothea) Fickies, Elinore (Windy) Martin, Marion (Soapy) Ehret, Joyce Fickies, and Earl (Bud) Fickies who lost his life on Okinawa in WWII while serving his country.

Her children include: Karol Canen, David (Diana) Emerson, Sidney Rodts, Michele (Greg) Bortone and Susan Strope.

She loved her grandchildren who include: Ryan Rodts and Angie Marsh, Jacob (Tara) Rodts, Stephanie Krueper, Allison (Jeff) Rowe, Gretel (Jay) O'Connor, Chase (Jamie) Bortone, Kim (Don) Storms, Paige Whitman, Julie (Matt) Cooper, Jason (Krystal) Emerson, and Jeff (Ludmilla) Emerson.

Lilah had a clutch of great-grandchildren. They include: Austin Rodts, Louie and Leo Krueper, Holland and River Rowe, Sophia Bortone, Izzy and Collin O'Connor, Lillianna, Gregory, and Benjamin Bortone, Carly and Olivia Storms, Kelsey Crandall, Hunter and Clinton Whitman, Tatiana Emerson, Chloe, Caroline, Jacob, Cameron, Corinna , and Caleb Cooper. In addition, she had two great-great grandchildren: Emmit and Aaliya Oliver.

Lilah was fond of her special nephews: Gail (Nancy) Ehret and Terry and Frank Fickies.

Lilah's hobbies included: Gardening, reading and playing cards. She would play a game of ‘Gin Rummy’ at the drop of a dime with anyone brave enough to challenge her and more times than not was declared the ‘Grand Champion’ of the family. She enjoyed hosting Sat. night family dinners, feeding the birds, and eating a delicious piece of pie. Interestingly she departed on ‘Pi Day’. She loved a cold glass of chocolate milk, pepsi, or wine. She was not afraid to have a twinkie for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Visitors could count on enjoying a bottomless jar of double stuffed oreos, cashews, and the latest gossip magazines. She loved reading and had an extensive lending library.

Fly high our sweet Mom, Granny, High Commander, and best friend.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart, Indiana.

Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with her arrangements.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the FOP on 12th Street in Mishawaka from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017
