Judge Everette Lee Morgan, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 13, 2017, after an illness.

Judge Morgan was born in Statesville, NC, a son of the late Everette and Virginia Newsome Morgan. He graduated from Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC, in 1944 and entered the U. S. Navy at age 17, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of operations during World War II. He received the American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific, Philippine Liberation, and World War II Victory medals, as well as the Distinguished Service Award and Search and Rescue Ribbon.

He graduated from Duke University where he was a member of the varsity baseball team and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a graduate of the USC Law School in 1953, where he was elected president of the Law School student body. He was inducted into the Order of the Wig and Robe, a scholastic society, serving as Chief Justice. He was assistant editor of the S.C. Law Review.

Judge Morgan practiced law in Florence for many years. He was a member of the American and State Bar Associations. He served as president of the Florence County Bar Association in 1967, and served as US Commission and US Magistrate Judge for 10 years, and as Assistant Solicitor for the 12th Circuit for 3 years. In 1990, he became a Federal Administrative Law Judge, serving until December 31, 2012.

He was an avid aviator, logging numerous flying hours and was a commissioner on the Florence Airport Commission in the 60’s.

Judge Morgan was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and taught the Ed Rivers Sunday School Class of over 40 years. He was a member of the VFW and served as its athletic officer for many years. He was an assistant coach of the Florence American Legion Baseball team in 1961 and ’62. He was also chairman of the Stadium Baseball Commission during the time the Toronto Blue Jays affiliate played in Florence in the 1980’s. For a short time, he played semi-pro baseball in the Yadkin Valley League in the North Carolina. He was also a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association.

He was an avid baseball fan and loved flying. He held instrument and multi-engine ratings, and flew many search and rescue missions for the USAF, Civil Air Patrol, and law enforcement.

He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Jane Morgan; and a sister, Frances Pridgen.
