Emma Mathilda Carlson, a native of California, passed away June 9, 2004, in Fortuna, at the age of 82.

Emma was born in Fortuna on March 27, 1922, to Sarah and Ernest Rohl, Sr.

She attended various grammar schools throughout Humboldt County, and Arcata High School. In 1940, she married Arnold Dahlberg, and in 1962, she married Andrew E. Carlson.

Emma was employed at Brizards of Arcata, and Montgomery Wards in Eureka for 22 years. For several years, she was a docent at the Eureka Maritime Museum, and a volunteer at the Eureka Senior Resource Center. She was also a 50-year member of the Arcata Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Emma is survived by her husband, Andrew E. Carlson of Eureka; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Elder of Fortuna; grandchild, Deborah Piazza of Eureka; great-grandchildren, Derek Piazza of Beaverton, Ore., and Alyssa Piazza of Eureka; brother, Arlen and Arlene Rohl of Eutawville, S.C.; nephews, Allen Pierce, Jr., of Eureka, Jerry Carlson of Eureka, Chuck and Pam Swope of Deming, Wash., Douglas Rohl of Yakima, Wash., Ernie and Janis Rohl III of Fortuna, Jeff and Kim Rohl of Holly Hill, S.C., Dr. Donald J. (Skip) and Jan Ferguson of Boston, Mass.; nieces, Arlene and Ken Britt of Eureka, Louise and Clay Sollers of Fortuna, Vickie Swope of Blaine, Wash., Sharon Rohl of Covelo, Jennifer and Charlie Barrett of Manning, S.C., Michele and Joe Carlson of Beaverton, Ore., Cheryl and Bruce Bergman of Everett, Wash., June Wheeler of Arcadia, and Barbara Jensen of El Dorado Hills; other relatives and special friends, Wayne and Linda Palmrose of Eureka, Agnas Eastgate of Eureka, John Dahlberg of Eureka, Francis and Joe Willey of Blocksburg, Vernon Evans and Family of Windsor, Ekkehard Rohl of Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, Ellen Pierce of Eureka, Albert and Ebba Carlson of Eureka, Signe Luscomb of Hawaii and numerous other Carlson, Pullen and Evans family members and friends.

Emma was preceded in death by her first husband, Arnold Dahlberg; grandson, Donald R. Dutton, Jr.; brother, Ernest Rohl, Jr.; sister, Lillian Swope; and nephew, Allen Swope.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside ceremony at Ocean View Cemetery, Rhododendron Garden, Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 1 p.m. The officiant will be Pastor Douglas A. Rohl, Yakima, Wash.

The family would like to give a special thanks to "all" of the staff of the Eureka Dialysis Unit, for the loving care they provided to Emma.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka.
