..."These two friends came to the Brule Creek neighborhood in a colony of emigrants from Syracuse, New York. They bought the Dr. A.R. Phillips farm in Brule in 1863 or 1864. My father, as justice, took acknowledgment of the deed. In the home on this land I heard Rev. Albert Gore preach the first sermon I heard in Dakota, in July, 1862. On a manure pile in front of the old barn on this farm was delivered the first political speech I ever heard on the Brule, by Gen. Todd, candidate for delegate to congress. Mr. Coykendall had worked in New York state mainly on the Erie canal, first as driver and manager of the horses and afterward as pilot of canal boats. Farming was not much to his liking, as he was not used to it. Mrs. Coykendall was an expert homemaker from the use of the needle to the best with the rolling pin. Both were my good friends always. From their good home my wife [Mary A. Coykendall] came to me and after her death they were still the same blessed people. They passed on a good while ago to a rich reward." Author: William H.H. Fate.
