Dick was born Harley A. Shank. He was a pugilist fighter and changed his name to that of a popular fighter at the time in hopes of drawing a larger crowd to his fights. He was Frank Mason's best friend and promised to marry Sadie when Frank was on his death bed. Dick and Sadie married only a few weeks after Frank's death. Dick and Sadie lived in Oklahoma City and moved back to Chetopa when Sadie was ill thinking Sadie was going to die. Sadie had her teeth pulled, had dentures made, and made a full recovery. Mean while Dick found employment at the Tri City Gas Co. where his step son, George, worked. Within three months of living in Kansas, he died when his appendix burst. I cannot find an account of his death or burial except for the date reported in the minutes of an Odd Fellows meeting. I know Frank Mason was buried by the Knights of Pythias in Tulsa and Sadie was a member of the Rebeckah's all her life. I am assuming the Odd Fellows buried Dick. I am making this memorial to him in Oak Hill as Sadie and her parents are buried here and it make sense he would have been buried here, too. I will update this memorial whenever I find anything to the contrary.
