IN MEMORY OF DUDLEY RUSSELL BRIGGS

Dudley Russell Briggs went to Heaven on March 12, 2017, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Called “Dudley”, “Doug” or “Dude” by various friends and family, Dudley was born on April 6, 1932, in Baytown, Texas, to Arthur and Ruth Briggs, one of eight children – four boys and four girls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Albert Briggs and Edgar Briggs, sister Joanne and granddaughter Jennifer Pruitt. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Anita Briggs and Irma Briggs, brother and sister-in-law Damon and Betty Briggs, sisters Marie Ratliff, Norma Davis and Rose Rawson, daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Richard Hoyt, son and daughter-inlaw Jim and Teresa Briggs, grandsons Preston, Jim and Barclay and five great-grandchildren.

In his childhood in Highlands, Texas, about 20 miles east of downtown Houston, Dudley and his pals were adventure-seeking, mischief-making boys. In 1947, at age 15, Dudley persuaded his parents to sign the necessary documents enabling him to enlist in the U.S. Navy. Scoring well on
his qualification exam, the Navy assigned him to become a hospital corpsman. He departed Houston for San Diego by train from Union Station. In the Navy, Dudley was a skilled and well liked corpsman and was on the Navy boxing team.

Discharged in 1950 at the age of 18, he returned home.
Dudley went to work at the San Jacinto Ordinance Depot in Baytown, which manufactured ammunition for the military, and he continued his amateur boxing career. Around 1954, he transferred to the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Joliet, Illinois. While there he met Dolores Fueglein, a co-worker, and they were married in June 1955. Their daughter, Cindy, was born in Joliet in 1956, and son, Jim, was born in 1958.

Dudley had taken up flying, and around 1960 got a job as a pilot for an affiliate of CBS Sports in Chicago. The family moved back to Houston in 1962, closer to the Briggs extended family. Initially employed in Houston as a flying instructor, he soon went to work as the corporate pilot for an oilfield equipment company. For the next dozen years or so, he flew for various companies, accumulating over 11,000 flying hours in propeller planes and jets. The family had a farm in Brenham in the late ‘60s, where they kept horses and cattle and spent many happy weekends and summers. In the early ‘70s, Dudley and Dolores divorced.

Retiring from being a pilot, Dudley pursued various jobs and launched business ventures in television and vacation travel. Always a voracious reader and a student of the written word, Dudley began writing in the late ‘90s, publishing an adventure novel about a boy and his horse entitled, “Old Black”, short stories and books about the gun laws of the state of Texas. For a couple of years prior to his death, Dudley had been working on a political thriller.

From approximately 2008 until the fall of 2016, Dudley worked at the Seabrook Visitors Center in Seabrook, Texas. He loved his work and his colleagues at the visitors center, and greatly enjoyed meeting people from the bay area, around the U.S. and around the world. Having traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad, he loved sharing stories and experiences with visitors. His job at the visitors center was a wonderful source of engagement and friendship for him.

By God’s grace, Dudley accepted Jesus as his savior in the mid-2000s. He was baptized by pastor Alan Neel at Life Community Church and was a regular at the Tuesday morning Bible study led by pastor Neel at Happy Harbor, his apartment residence. Dudley continued to grow in his faith
until his death.

As his illness progressed rapidly and it became evident that his life on Earth was nearing its end, Dudley demonstrated courage, grace and faith. He knew that God was present and he was encouraging, grateful and gracious to healthcare professionals, friends and family.

He was highly complimentary of the quality of care and the compassion shown by doctors, nurses and support staff within the Veterans Administration health system. Dudley’s family is grateful to friends and extended family for their prayers and support, particularly Glen and Judy Harding, pastor Alan Neel, Dudley’s colleagues, Rebecca Thompson and D’Anna at the Seabrook Visitors Center, his friends at Happy Harbor and the professionals at the VA. We are especially thankful to God for his kindness, mercy and grace.
