Captain Earl Winford Holcomb flew his last mission into the heavens on Sunday, March 5th at 5 a.m. in the morning. He was surrounded by his granddaughters, as well as his daughter.
Earl died after complications from a stroke.
Earl was born in Canyon, Texas on November 19,1923. He later moved to California and joined the Air Force during W.W. II and flew a B-17, 19 missions over Nazi Germany, a true American hero, before returning home to marry Suzanne Lang (1922-2015) in May of 1944.
Earl and Suzanne had two children, Earl Winford Holcomb Jr. (1947-1964), and S.
Earl and Suzanne, along with their family, were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Livermore where Earl sang in the choir and was a Deacon. He worked as an Electronics Coordinator at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. Earl was well-known in particular at Andrew Christensen School over the years for being a yard duty supervisor, a classroom helper and field trip driver, and later a “griller" at the middle school’s bar-b-q each year.
Later in retirement he and Suzanne moved to Portland, Oregon in 2007.
Earl was known for captaining his blue “Magnolia” boat with its 100 Mercury motor while pulling family and friends on water-skis on the Delta, Lake Tahoe, and Lake Tulloch.
He was also an avid gardener, gardening from a tender young age in Texas, until this past summer. Most of all, Earl was a family man extraordinaire who helped three generations with his love, patience, curiosity, and timeless devotion.
He is a man who will be greatly missed by his devoted family and friends.
Earl and Suzanne were blessed with Great Grandchildren
Names of the living have been omitted
