William Gorton was born in New Mexico, a son of William Ansel Gorton 1876–1935 and Edna Vernice Smock 1886–1957. He had a sister Onda Maplet 1909–1986.

His family lived in Dawson, New Mexico, where his father was a bookkeeper at a coal mine in 1910. By 1920 they were in New Plymouth, Idaho and his father was a salesman at a woolen mill.

William graduated from the University of Idaho and later earned his master's degree in agricultural economics at Oregon State University.

William married Helen Christena McKeen 1907-1999 in 1934 in Republic, Washington. They had a daughter Helen Ann.

He served as a Navy lieutenant during World War H.

He was employed briefly by the United Fruit Corp. and the Farm Security Administration before joining the U.S. State Department where he was an economist 30 years for the U.S. State Department, with most of his career spent overseas and in the Middle East.

They retired to Sun City, Arizona in 1963 from Khartoun, Sudan.

William was a member of the Sun City Square Club, Camera Club, Swim Club, and Men's Club here and a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Beirut, Lebanon. He was also a representative and member of the Arizona chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was listed in Who's Who of America from 1962 to 1965.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; daughter, Helen Ann Gorton of Karamursel, Turkey; and sister Onda Heckathorn in Maryland.
