Margaret E. “Marge” Martin, longtime resident of Oak Harbor, passed away Jan. 29. She was 95.

Born in Saratoga, Wash., to George and Elva Neyman, she graduated from Sequim High School at age 16 in 1938. She graduated business college and went to work for Standard Oil Co.

Learning of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, she earned her private pilot license in Spokane, applied to the program and graduated in early 1944 as one of only 1,074 women pilots. She was stationed in Douglas, Ariz., until the program was disbanded.

She then worked in San Francisco, where she met and married Paull Smyth. They moved to Whidbey Island in 1951 where she later began her career at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island until she retired 22 years later as the commanding officer’s secretary.

After Paull’s passing, she married C.J. “Tiny” Martin who predeceased her.

Marge is survived by her four children Fred (Anita) Smyth, Oak Harbor; Gretchen Smyth, Seattle; Mitsi Vondrachek, Newberg, Ore.; and Paula (Dave) Bondo, Mill Creek, Wash.; as well as four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
