Jay O. Gearhart Sr., 88, of Lewistown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

He was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Milroy, the son of the late George E. and Ottessa (Collins) Gearhart. He is survived by his wife, Faye Y. Gearhart.

Also surviving are his children: Judy Ann Frankhouser and husband, Albert, of Reedsville, Jay Gearhart Jr. and wife, Judy, of Lewistown, George Gearhart and companion, Betty, of Lewistown, Tammy Bossert and husband, Brian, of Mifflintown, Donald Blessing and companion, Angela Koch, of Lewistown, Lewis Blessing, of Mifflintown, Tina Humphrey, of Lewistown, Darwin Stultz, of Mifflintown, Marian Moore and companion, Pat McConaughey, of Lewistown, and Isaac Gearhart, of Lewistown; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchild- ren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

Jay was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine A. Guthridge (1964), and by his second wife, Doris J. Blessing (1976).

Jay was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by: three sisters, Lorrain Bubb, Gertrude Civitts and Erma Gearhart; and two brothers, Richard Gearhart and Clarence Gearhart.

Jay served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Jay started his career driving coast to coast hauling freight; but, he had a calling for the outdoors and after 15 years of being on the road, he began a career as a lumberjack that would be a lifelong passion. After an injury, Jay retired early, but retirement was not for Jay. So, he returned to work. This time working alongside his oldest son, Jay Jr., at Ram Wood Custom Cabinetry, retiring in 2008.

Jay was a life member at the Yeagertown Fire Company. He was also a member of the Yeagertown Fire Police and a founding member of the Lewistown River Rats.

Jay loved spending time with his family, especially when the family was camping. He loved taking camping trips, taking them whenever possible. His second greatest love was the outdoors. Jay was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed being out in the woods or on the water. He was an experienced angler and won numerous fishing tournaments. Jay’s love of the water was so apparent that the first place to look for him was always on the water.

Jay enjoyed spending time with his dogs: Andy, Tanner and Tucker. They brought him great comfort and he loved them dearly.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Pastor Ronald Stacey officiating.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the funeral home.

Interment with VFW Post 7011 honors will take place in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown.
