The son of Samuel & Catherine (Utz) Overdeer, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his brother Henry, a master carpenter, in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 5 as a private with Co. C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. His brother Henry served in the same company.
2. Enlisted in Chambersburg March 6, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 11 as a private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He married Lucinda M. Hoke or Maria Lohr reportedly on October 1, 1863. Both names are reported, but "Lucinda" is used in the censuses.
