Edith Irene Spire, 92, Sedan, KS, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, Sedan.
She was born June 18, 1914 south of Peru, KS to William and Atcha Robinson-Vanderhoof. She attended Plymouth Grade School, north of Quivira Ranch and graduated from Sedan High School in 1933.
On Sept. 15, 1933 she married Jesse Eugene "Gene" Spire in Sedan, KS. They made their home in the Sedan area. She was employed with Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company for 19 years, retiring in 1974.
They lived most of their life south of Sedan until 2000 when they sold their home and moved to Chanute, KS to live in an assisted living home before returning to Sedan in 2004 to live in Pleasant Valley Manor. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2006.
She enjoyed working outdoors, playing softball in her younger years, all sports, and was an avid bowler.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Sedan.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and Richard Potter, Sedan, KS, and Gloria Jean and Jerry Shaw, Dewey, OK; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Eugene and Joyce Spire, Chanute, KS; three sisters, Ada Mills and June Doty, of Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, KS, and Ruth Call, Bartlesville, OK; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Sedan with the Rev. Dennis Spire officiating and Earl Tresner assisting. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, KS under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, Sedan.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 16 and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
