George Young, 79 of Paris, Texas, passed away March 4, 2017, after a short but valiant fight with cancer. He was born February 11, 1938 in Floydada, Texas to G.T. and Victorene Young.

They moved to Paris, where he became passionate about the Red River Valley Boys’ & Girls’ Club, Golf and the Nineteenth Hole, and Norma Bangs. He and Norma married on September 5, 1957, and they stayed in Paris where they raised children Kristi and Gary, and where George was very active in clubs and coaching youth sports. George was instrumental in helping start Pee Wee Football, and he served as a basketball and football referee for years.

George graduated from Paris High School and East Texas State University, and he served in the Texas Army National Guard at Camp Maxey. He was a local businessman. Along with his mother, he owned and operated Young’s News Agency, and later Compass Medical Supply. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served for years on the Finance Committee.

Several years ago, George donated and sold the old Young News Agency building to First United Methodist Church for its Downtown Food Pantry ministry. He loved volunteering there.

George was very philanthropic and cared deeply about the Boys’ & Girls’ Club and Noon Optimist Club, and he served as President of both organizations. He was also a supportive member of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. In 2003, George was inducted into the Boys’ & Girls’ Club Wall of Honor. He was never afraid to ask you to give money to the causes he loved. He was good at making you pay up, such as at the golf course where he had the honorary title of “Dictator.”

George was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister, Bettye Player. He is survived by his daughter, Kristi Young, son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sydney Young, and by his grandchildren: Erin Thode, Russell McDowell, Grant McDowell, Zane Young, Jack McDowell, Zoie Young and Lucy McDowell. He also is survived by great-grandchild Moxy Jennings, and numerous nephews and nieces.

After private burial, George’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service at First Methodist Church at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 8.
